Cadence Biomedical Debuts New Neurorehabilitation System

Kickstart Walking System provides new hope for patients struggling to walk again
LAS VEGAS – Feb 4, 2014—Cadence Biomedical announced the release of the therapeutic version of the Kickstart Walking System, a rehabilitation system designed to help physical therapists achieve exponential gains and accelerated rehabilitation with patients following a neurological injury. The new system will be made available to all physical therapy clinics in the U.S., starting in March.
Kickstart’s technology is revolutionary in that it provides effective walking assistance that is patient- initiated and uses a patient’s existing motor skills to promote learning. Its Exotendon technology requires no electronics or programming and works like an artificial tendon to store and release energy for each step, enabling users to return to walking and achieve new levels of independence.
“More than two million Americans suffer from severe mobility impairments as a result of stroke and other neurological injury,” said Brian Glaister, CEO of Cadence Biomedical. “The ability for Kickstart to help people walk and regain their lives is the main driver behind why we do what we do. We’re excited to bring this technology to the physical therapy market.”
Several case studies for the Kickstart as an effective neurorehabilitation system will be presented at the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting.
The case studies find that after patients used Kickstart, they were able to reach higher levels of community ambulation with increased gait speed and greater endurance. More importantly, patients who used the system for both home and in-clinic therapy have reported improvements in strength and coordination that have enabled them to walk more independently even when not wearing Kickstart.
Kickstart has strong potential for widespread clinical adoption as it is easily incorporated into a therapist’s existing therapeutic programs and can be beneficial for a wide array of patients with neurological conditions, including those with gait abnormalities, general weakness or lack of endurance or stability.
